  17. <p>     Senator JAY ROCKEFELLER'S decision last week to bow out
  18. of the race for the Democratic presidential nomination was
  19. welcome news for Bush's campaign gurus. After digging into the
  20. patrician West Virginian's past, Bush handlers concluded their
  21. "opposition research" had turned up virtually nothing negative.
  22. The best the Bushies could do was a 1984 book chiding
  23. Rockefeller for zigzagging on a few issues. "He made a mistake
  24. by pulling out," says a White House adviser. "And we're glad he
  25. did."
